Difference Between Free Quotations And Professional Assessments
We are constantly doing quotations for tree work and we often find that the ‘quote’ is really for a diagnosis or assessment. So what is the difference?
Simply put, if you require us to supply you with any information regarding pests, diseases or health/safety of a tree then it’s not a free quote.
Another way of looking at it is to think of other industries.
For instance, your washing machine breaks down, you call a plumber.
You: “Can you come and look at my washing machine, it stopped working.”
Plumber: “Sure, that’ll be a service charge of $x dollars.”
This is the same as calling us out to assess health or safety of trees, or diagnose pests or diseases. We are imparting our professional knowledge to help you understand the problem.
We may also give you a quote to remedy that problem or issue, the same as a plumber or mechanic would, but you also have the opportunity to get other quotes on the basis of the information we gave you, the same as you would with a plumber or mechanic.
A free quote or estimate will be for:
You: “Can you come and prune my tree so I can have more sunlight in my yard and also clear back some limbs from my neighbour’s house?”
Tree company: “Sure, we’ll come by and give you a free quote.”
An assessment/diagnosis is for:
Imparting our knowledge to assess the health, structure or defect of a tree which we then share with you, verbally or in a report.
You: “My tree looks sick and a big limb fell off, can you come tell me what’s wrong with it and is it dangerous?”
Tree company: “Sure, that will be an assessment fee of $x dollars for telling you what is wrong with it, and we can also at the same time give you a quote to remedy that problem.”
So you see, if you know what you want done to the tree, its FREE.
If you need an experts’ opinion and knowledge to assist you in finding out what is wrong with the tree, it’s a FEE.
